iBurst:

Overview

The iBurst service provides you with continued high-speed connectivity to your corporate services or the Internet. Within the area of the base station network closest to you, you can maintain this connection in an always-on mode. You no longer need to wait until you get to a location which provides connectivity.

As the services on the Internet expand to include all aspects of life, many are only at their full potential if they’re available as soon as your need arises. Because you can access information at any time with iBurst, you no longer need to plan ahead or guess what information to download to local storage to use later.

Similarly, any data you receive while on the move (i.e. digital photos) can be transferred immediately to the online environment for storage or for others to access.

The end result is a unique user experience of the freedom that the iBurst service provides. It’ll be very hard for you to go back to an existence where the online world is not always available at your fingertips.

Technology

iBurst services are based on IntelliCell technology from ArrayComm in the US. They maintain the extreme levels of efficiency in using available radio frequencies. Through advanced algorithms, IntelliCell adaptive antenna technology adjusts signal patterns to and from each subscriber, creating a ’personal cell’ for efficient delivery of voice or data services. These personal cells follow people as they move, reducing radio interference.

With IntelliCell, each base station uses a small array of off-the-shelf antennas, coupled with ArrayComm’s sophisticated signal processing techniques. This dynamically controls radio signals between the base station and you, the user.

The signal selectively amplifies each user’s intended signal and rejects all unwanted signals, allowing more users to share the spectrum. The result is a significant increase in capacity and coverage that leads to substantial reductions in the costs for infrastructure deployment, network operations, system maintenance and radio spectrum.

Conventional base stations, unlike IntelliCell base stations, transmit energy in all directions. In this instance, only a small fraction of the signal reaches the intended subscriber. The rest of the RF energy is wasted and generates noise interfering with other users in the system.

More recent techniques of ’pointing’ a signal to the intended user are hampered by the abundance of physical obstacles like buildings and trees that make transmission impossible.

iBurst technology is a wide-area mobile broadband technology offering a unique combination of high speed, wide range and high base station capacity. Base stations deployed by a network operator, much like today’s cellular services, and wireless modems or PC cards that customers use with an existing Internet appliance, such as a notebook.

Unlike voice networks such as GSM, CDMA and 3G standards - iBurst technology has been designed from the ground up to provide pure data and with the incorporation of IntelliCell technology it’s able to provide the wireless data much more efficiently than the voice based cellular networks.

As a result the iBurst network is able to provide data rates of up to 1 Mbps to each user with a maximum base station capacity of 20 Mbps. As well as being superior in performance, the data delivery over an iBurst network is also significantly more economical than voice networks.

The data charges for iBurst based data are comparable to that charged for wired access such as DSL. In comparison, data transferred over voice networks can be up to two orders of magnitude more expensive.

Hardware

Modem for laptop computers (PCMCIA card)

The iBurst Access Card provides mobile connectivity . When connected to a mobile device such as a laptop or PDA you can connect on the move as long as the device remains inside the network coverage.

Modem for desktop computers (USB with Ethernet port)

The iBurst Access Bridge provides fixed mode connectivity. It looks similar to a traditional modem. It has a connection to mains power, a small extending aerial and ports allowing connectivity through Ethernet or USB.

This allows fixed broadband connection benefits with added portability, allowing it to be disconnected by unplugging it from the mains and moving it to a new location to be reconnected by powering up the iBurst Access Bridge again.

Movement is easier than the fixed line connection whether between rooms or cities. It can be connected to a single computer or attached to a local area network or a wireless network for shared access between devices in the home or office.

USB Modem for laptops and desktops

The USB iBurst Modem is suitable for both laptops and desktops.

This allows for the benefits of a fixed or mobile broadband connection allowing the choice and freedom to set it up in an office or move around into a new location without losing connection.

iBurst Laptop Antenna

Only iBurst approved external antennas should be used. The bracket mounted directional antenna can be used with Laptop or Desktop modems. These antennas enhance weak RF signals at the edge of coverage areas. In areas where there is no coverage, antennas won’t provide a signal.

iBurst Desktop Antenna

Only iBurst approved external antennas should be used. The bracket mounted directional antenna can be used with Desktop modems. These antennas enhance weak RF signals at the edge of coverage areas. In areas where there in no coverage, antennas won’t provide a signal.

iBurst Omni Antenna

Only iBurst approved external antennas should be used. The high gain directional antenna is developed for iBurst 1787 to 1797 MHz and is ideal for pole or wall mounting. A bracket for mounting is included. This antenna enhances signal in weak areas and speeds up data transfer.

Features and Benifits

Features

Benefits

Speed

Up to 1 Mbps data connectivity

Users can recover time that would normally have been spent waiting for data to transfer. This could either be used to get more work done or gain more leisure time.

Access

Wide area wireless access means that access is available wherever the user needs it.

There is no need for the user to seek out a location or wait until they go to somewhere with connectivity to do what they want to do.

Capacity

Unique spatial processing feature allows multiple re-use of the same spectrum yielding exceptional capacity from just 5 MHz of spectrum.

The user is more likely to have access to all the bandwidth they need without having to be slowed down by other users.

Availability

Always on connectivity

Secure and immediate access to the Internet and corporate services "wherever you are, whenever you want".

Simplicity

The service is fully compatible with existing laptops, PDAs and desktop computers - no upgrades or new devices required.

The user can be confident that installation will be easy, quick and not harm their computer systems.

Security

Many characteristics of the iBurst service combine to make it more secure than existing wireless delivery modes including the directionality of the signal as well as extensive encryption of the data transferred.

The user can carry out confidential activities such as banking transactions; carry on business in sensitive areas such as health, etc. confident that the data being transferred is secure.

Frequently asked questions

Can I share my iBurst connection with others?

Yes. The desktop modem provides a broadband link to a local network which may be a traditional wired LAN or a wireless LAN using an 802.11 access point.

Does my unused bandwidth roll over to the next month?

No. Bandwidth is allocated at midnight on the 1st of every month.
If you have unused bandwidth, it’ll be reset with the new allocation to your account.

Does it matter where I put my device on my premises?

Yes. IBurst units should not be deep within houses or businesses, preferably place your device near a window, with as clear a line to base stations as possible so as not to cause connection problems.

How is my bandwidth consumption measured?

Bandwidth is measured by counting all packet traffic originating from & destined to the session IP address of your connection.

This consumption is session based & is reflected on the bandwidth monitor once a session is closed, meaning that if the session lasts over several days, it'll only be reflected on the bandwidth monitor on the day the session is disconnected.

What are good locations for iBurst devices?

Any areas that are not too built up or dense i.e.: close to window with not too many trees in the way, not on the floor, rather a window sill.
